Zarkana Cirque du Soleil

This weekend I went to see Cirque du Soleil at the Radio City Hall, a show I’ve been wanting to see for a very long time. My parents had seen it in Europe, so I was curious to see it.

According to the show’s creators, Zarkana is an acrobatic rock opera that blends circus arts with the surreal to create a world where physical virtuosity rubs shoulders with the strange.

The story follows Zark, a magician who has lost his powers – and the love of his life – in an abandoned theatre populated by a motley collection of off-the-wall characters and incomparable acrobats. He runs into the Mutants, four sirens as sinister as they are fabulous, who are determined to divert him from his quest.

My thoughts on the show are mixed; I really enjoyed the acrobatics, the decor and the music, they created an overall spectacular atmosphere. However, I was not so taken by the two circus characters, which were meant to be funny and to create a break from the jaw-dropping acrobatics. In my opinion, it was an unnecessary filler to make time pass by.

If you haven’t yet seen it, take advantage of the last remaining days of the New York show, or if you happen to stop by Las Vegas, you can see it there beginning with November 1st.
