Labor Day weekend on Block Island

“Twelve miles off the Rhode Island coast lies a vacation destination often overlooked in the region’s tourism sweepstakes.  But if Block Island lacks the stargazing appeal of the celebrity isles of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, the visitors who swarm off the ferries here from Memorial Day to Columbus Day appear blissfully unconcerned. That may be due to the island’s alluring blend of so many elements that help a frazzled refugee from the working world exhale and relax.  This pork chop-shaped island has gorgeous beaches, stunning ocean vistas, 32 miles of hiking trails, 250-foot-high coastal cliffs, a deep sense of history, and a lively night scene.”   -Brian MacQuarrie, The Boston Globe 2007

Arriving by ferry from New London, Connecticut, I was thrilled to discover this offshore hideaway’s many charms: the Victorian architecture, the historic Atlantic Inn and the scenic natural sights. Set high on a hill, the Atlantic Inn is a truly unique and quiet location to savor the delights of the laid-back island vibe.  Looking out from the Inn’s wraparound veranda, guests are treated to breathtaking views of Old Harbor and the ocean beyond, with its welcoming beaches.

What I loved the most about this inn (although I did not stay overnight), was the instant feel of an older era, baring a charm far removed from the realities surrounding us. The antique filled rooms have no televisions or radio, offering a true getaway from the always connected modern world …

Close to the inn, I was pleasantly surprised by some unexpected friends from Manisses Farm.

Strolling around the island, I could not stop myself shrieking with joy at the sight of these divine vintage metal tables and chairs; I can already envision them, perfectly situated at my future sprawling house by the lake. They sure do look like ensembles from The Great Gatsby’s – the Roaring 20s – my all-time favorite era.

I really enjoyed the architecture, and the overall New England vibe.
